Music is in KarmaRé’s blood. Both of her parents are musicians, so she didn’t discover a love for music so much as inherit it. Growing up in Long Island, music was a part of everyday life, from singing at her temple to rocking out to the Spice Girls at summer camp. In first grade, she picked up violin, a passion she pursued through college, where she studied music and singing.
Fast forward to today, and KarmaRé has gone from working as a studio vocalist and vocal coach to solo artist with a one-year record deal after winning a recent competition. Her EP, “Not Fazed”, is her first release, which she co-produced with bass player Matt Fishman of Cool Company.
KarmaRé’s sound—which she refers to as “folky dark pop”—is beautiful, modern, and as cool as her blue hair. She’s inspired by a wide array of musicians, like Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly and the legendary Ella Fitzgerald. As for her emotional lyrics, those often come to her when she’s doing something else, like driving (this is where MicroSoft OneNote comes in handy). But sometimes, her best stuff comes simply from freestyling, figuring it out as she goes, and tweaking it later.
Be on the lookout for her album drop in the next year. If “Not Fazed” is any indication, it’s bound to anything but generic.
